The Emperor's General

A fascinating historical story mainly about General MacArthur at the end of WW II as American forces retake the Philippines and Japan surrenders and MacArthur becomes the ruler of Japan during the occupation. The narrator's personal story is very good, and through him we get to know some of the major players, especially on the Japanese side, and we understand some trade-offs and dilemmas he and MacArthur encountered. Historical background on Nanking and Manila. I found that Webb is not an excellent writer, in detail (word choice, etc.), but the story and the history more than make up for that.
